Gift of God

a burning flame with a black background. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, love and of self-discipline. (2 Timothy 1:6,7 NIV)

Fan into flames the gift of God! How do these words make you feel?  Guess what? I know you will be surprised… they make me feel empowered!  I hope many of you are with me!  However, we do not instantly get to the point of being empowered.  Let’s be realistic, Timothy was not here yet or Paul would not have needed to encourage him.  Paul’s letter to Timothy is an encouragement to each one of us.

Gift of God is his son, Jesus.  He sacrificed his one and only son because He loved you and me.   Jesus, ultimate sacrifice, took each one of our sins to the cross.  All we have to do is receive.  Jesus is a gift that keeps on giving.  His mercies are new every morning. He has given us the spirit of power, love and of self-discipline.  Our flesh can get us into trouble much of the time. Yet, when we accept Jesus as our personal Savior, his spirit now lives in us.  We no longer give life to past sins.  Once we ask for forgiveness, all sins have been washed away. Paul encouraged Timothy, God saved us and called us to a holy life.  This has nothing to do with anything we have done, yet for God’s own purpose and grace.

God’s own purpose and grace brings us back to our topic all week.  These dreams I hope you have given thought to are embedded in us for God’s own purpose.  I have developed a theory thinking about the army of God.  What makes up the army of God?  Christians is the right answer.  However, what are these Christians suppose to be doing? We are definitely not suppose to be coming against each other.   An army can only be as strong as each solider’s skill level working in unity.  If we do not fan the flame of our gift, then we are losing strength which overall weakens God’s army.  We must realize any sense of doubt or fear was not given to us by Jesus. These are lies of Satan.  It is through the Holy Spirit we have power (strength), be able to love, and have self-discipline to complete the task God has given each one of us.

Be encouraged!  We are all needed in the army of God! Let’s do our part to make it mighty!
